What is LPG?

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) stands for Butane Hydrocarbon Gas with the chemical formulas 1H4C, H3C and Propane, which usually contain small amounts of compounds such as propylene and butylen. Butane gas alone contains two compounds, isobutane and normal butane.

This fuel is also one of the products of the crude oil distillation tower. Due to the fact that the boiling point of butane is 0.5oC and the boiling point of propane is 42oC, this combination is in the form of gas at normal temperature. But when this gas is placed in pressurized tanks, about 8 atmospheres (Bar), it becomes liquid. LPG pressure often rises to about 13 atmospheres, which is why it is called liquefied petroleum gas.

LPG is mostly used for heating purposes and as a fuel for vehicles and in refineries, it is a by-product of natural gas purification and refining petroleum. It is also used in the manufacture of sprays as a cooling gas in refrigeration equipment such as refrigerators and freezers.

When gas turns to liquid, its volume decreases by about 300 times, in other words, if one liter of this liquid evaporates, its volume decreases by about 300 liters.

It is important to know that in the liquid gas tank, Some are in liquid form and some are in gaseous form. In other words, a balance has been established between the two states of liquid and gas. So that there is liquid at the bottom of the tank and gas at the top. As the pressure inside the tank increases, some of the gas becomes liquid and the volume of liquid increases. Conversely, as the pressure inside the tank decreases, some of the liquid turns to gas.

Due to the fact that the combustion temperature of liquefied petroleum gas is higher than that of petrol(The combustion temperature of propane gas is 550 oC and butane gas is 490 oC and the combustion temperature of petrol is about 370 oC.), Liquid gas is usually ignited later than petrol. So when we use liquefied petroleum gas as fuel, we need more time in the ignition system.

The calorific value of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is about 12,000 kcal per kilogram. This means that each kilogram of it can produce about 12,000 kilocalories of energy, which is even higher than the thermal value of gasoline and petrol.

Since liquefied petroleum gas has a higher octane number and thermal value than gasoline and petrol, if the base engine is gas-fired, the power and torque produced in it is even higher than gasoline and petrol. LPG is also considered a cheap fuel.

Note: Liquid gas is a healthier fuel than petrol due to the lack of toxic substances and unburned hydrocarbons in exhaust gases, and its environmental destructive effects are less.

Uses of LPG liquefied petroleum gas

Liquid gas is used in many places where it is not possible to use other sources because it is easily portable.

  • Use in homes for stoves and heating appliances
  • Industrial and commercial kitchens
  • Factories for fueling furnaces and burners
  • Flammable systems, gas turbines in combined cycle power plants
  • The second fuel for cars
